*I wrote this last month but didnt post it. After a heated conversation with a male friend who didn't understand why the required transvaginal ultrasound is a big effin deal, ive decided to now post it*
Its been nearly a year since I last spoke to you about your never ending plans to rule my vagina. At that time it was your desire to cut off Planned Parenthoods funding that had my panties in a bunch, but you've really outdone yourself now.
It was about a month ago that I first heard of the Ultrasound Abortion bill, which requires women to get a trans-vaginal ultrasound 24 hours before a scheduled abortion. In particular, the article I read was about this bill being passed in Texas, the provisions of which are the most severe of all the 11 states that employ it. Yes in good ol' Texas, a woman is not only required to have the ultrasound 24 hours before her abortion, but must also view the image, hear the heartbeat and be told of the babies current developmental state. Being that this ultrasound has no medical benefit to the woman or doctor, as trans-vaginal ultrasounds are a common part of the actual abortion procedure anyway (during which the screen is turned away from the woman), this is clearly a states way of telling us that we are making the wrong decision. Proponents of the bill have stated that they hope the ultrasound and 24 hour period following it will give the woman time to rethink her decision. Because she clearly hasn't thought it through enough. The choice of whether or not to abort is one of, if not the hardest decision a woman will ever have to make. It is not a decision any woman takes lightly and more thought and consideration and heartache goes into making it than you can ever understand. When the Supreme Court ruled on Roe v Wade so many years ago, the Court stated that during the first trimester, when the procedure is more safe than childbirth, the decision to abort must be left to the mother and her physician. The State has the right to intervene prior to fetal viability only to protect the health of the mother. The Court explicitly rejected a fetal "right to life" argument. Now while some states that employ this bill only mandate that a doctor offer the option of a pre-abortion ultrasound to a woman, the states who enforce it go far beyond that and have essentially told the Supreme Court decision to fuck off. To force a woman to undergo an unnecessary procedure, one that if she does not have insurance she will have to pay for, for the sake of YOUR beliefs and agendas is unconscionable. To make an unimaginably hard and uncomfortable situation that much harder is despicable. To continuously make efforts to gain control over a womans body is simply evil.
I planned to say a lot more but this is all I can stomach writing.
As always, fuck you,
K.S.
