"In the 1930s and ’40s, castration was practiced in California, where sex offenders and homosexuals received this “treatment.”
-Take out the castrating homosexuals part and you've got my platform for public office.
"Also, the first generation of sexual psychopath laws was passed during this time, mandating indefinite commitment for sexually violent predators."
-Interesting...go on...
"These days, the pendulum continues to swing further toward the punitive end of the spectrum, with ever more draconian sentencing and postrelease conditions. Under the federal Adam Walsh Child Protection Act, signed into law by President Bush in July, all sex offenders will be listed on the Internet, making information on offenders, regardless of whether they belong to a low-, medium- or high-risk category, publicly accessible; this includes people, for example, whose only crime is the possession of child pornography."
-Only child pornography...just let that linger for a minute...Okay, welcome back. You're goddamn right ALL sex offenders are listed on the internet, as they motherloving should be. We as adults have a duty to protect the children in our lives & communities from any dangers that are present, and have a right to any information that can aid us in doing so. Accessibility to these records as opposed to other types of criminals, say for instance murderers, is to me more important because these types of offenders have a specific victim: children. The recidivism rate amongst pedophiles in particular is very high and although there are treatment options available, it is generally thought to be an incurable disorder. So yeah, we want to know when there's one nearby.
"Obviously, this makes it increasingly difficult for ex-offenders to obtain residences or jobs — the mainstays of stability — and it subjects them to ongoing vigilantism and public censure. Although notification may make sense for some, it does not make sense for all."
-If an employer wants to run a background check or fingerprint you, they will find out if you have a criminal record, regardless of its existence on the internet. Just ask any other convicted criminal who has an "increasingly difficult" time obtaining that "mainstay of stability". As for obtaining a residence, sorry bro, maybe you should call the guy who wrote this article. Maybe he needs a live in nanny, I dunno. As we saw earlier, this guy is all NBD about the "less serious" types of offenses, like kiddie porn, so I'm sure thats the type of notification hes referring to. Lets read on and find out...
"In California, the most recent debate has been over whether Proposition 83, the law passed last year banning registered sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a school or park, can be retroactively applied to the 90,000 offenders who have already been released from prison. (Two federal judges ruled last month that it may not.)"
-This article was apparently written in 2007, as the law he's referring to, Jessicas law, was passed in 2006 (there was only 1 federal judge who ruled that it could not be applied, by the way and that decision was overturned 3 months later by another judge) and then, a few years later...
In 2010, the Supreme Court of California ruled that the residency requirements of Jessica's Law could be applied retroactively.
Yeahhhhhh, Supreme Court just got all up in yo face and banned your ass from San Francisco entirely (due to the high number of schools).
"What is being created is a class of individuals that is progressively demonized by society and treated in such a way that a meaningful reintegration into society is impossible."
-Mmmm yes, your boner for sex offenders is palpable, I can taste the tears streaming from your dick hole.
Get the fuck over it bud. These dudes and ladies are never going to live their crimes down. Ever. This is god damn America and were not cool with that shit. Ever. Meaningful reintegration? Fuck that. We dont want them back.
"Yes, sexual abuse is a serious matter. Yes, individuals who commit sexual crimes should be punished."
-Does anyone else picture the author doing the jerk off motion while he writes this?
"Unquestionably, a small percentage of sex offenders are very dangerous and must be removed from society. What’s more, we know that sexual crimes are devastating to victims and their families and that we must do all we can to protect ourselves from “predators.”

"But demonizing people rather than treating them makes little sense, and passing laws that are tough but mindless in response to political pressure won’t solve the problem either."
